The Problem

While replacing part of this home’s peaked roof, its owners sought to turn the space below into a spa-like bathroom—but unusual dimensions posed a design challenge.

The Solution

To work around the nooks and crannies, Barbara Elza Hirsch, of Elza B. Design, had to get creative. First, she made room for two vanities by extending mirrors beyond the dormered walls with custom-made clips. Then, to add storage, she carved cubbies into the walls. For the freestanding bath, Hirsch installed a round Japanese soaking tub to offset the room’s sharp lines. “With a cookie-cutter rectangular room, it wouldn’t have the kind of wow factor it has right now,” Hirsch says.
