Happening upon this cottage in the midst of its ethereal woodland setting is a bit like walking into a Thomas Kinkade painting—a quaint home insulated by towering trees, dappled light, a babbling brook, and a pond teeming with fish. Which is fitting, considering that the home has belonged for almost 50 years to a family of artists. When the domicile was first designed in 1965, it was a humble gable cabin in the woods. But five years after purchasing the idyllic dwelling in 1972, the owners reconceived the home to contain another two stories, and meshed the original building with a sloped roof addition.

Inside, the wooden abode bursts into color. That’s in part due to the vibrant, abstract paintings created by owner Paul Edward Leeming (which are also for sale), that turn the living area into a colorful gallery. Sunlight filtering through nature-themed stained glass windows pieced together by the owner’s brother-in-law add to the kaleidoscopic design. The rest of the oversized windows bring the lush scenery outside into each and every room.

While natural light is the common factor throughout the home, each space plays with color and function in its own way. The third floor, with its forest green ceiling, could function as an out-of-the-way office or a lofted guest room. Down the spiral staircase one level below, a bedroom suite with a soaring ceiling and a sunroom with lovely lavender walls can easily be reworked as a spacious den, as the sellers have done. Downstairs on the first floor, the kitchen, which features skylights peeking through vaulted ceiling beams, flows into a cozy window-side sitting area. Cork walls and light wooden cabinets set a down to earth tone, and royal blue formica counters are the final bold stroke on this painting of a home.
