You can tell from the fresh, modern interior that this Victorian has been renovated since it was first built in 1885. What you might not realize at first look is that the plans for the update are featured prominently in the home: Just off the living room, the walls of a wedge-shaped addition that contains a half bath are etched with the blown-up designs for the expansion and remodeling. The neighboring lounge features vaulted ceilings, wall-sized windows, and two antique teardrop light fixtures that bring a glow into the already radiant room.

Another example of the old mingling with the new are the hardwood floors, which in some spaces are newer oak and in others are made of 140-year-old pine. You’ll find the latter in the reading room which, down to the fireplace, was part of the original 1885 farmhouse. The kitchen, on the other hand, is full of contemporary choices. Save its street-facing windows from the 1880s, its cabinets, appliances, and layout are all results of the renovation. The cabinetry, made of quarter sawn cherry wood, was stained and then meticulously sanded to leave the stain only in the grains, giving them a light, textured look. It was Falmouth-based architect Jill Neubauer’s idea to install the stove into the countertop at an angle, creating a dynamic flow and even more usable prep space.

Judging by the wooded views through the many windows and the nearly four acres themselves—populated by mature trees, a veggie garden, separate cottage, and a pond—you might not realize how close the ocean actually is. Less than two miles from Shining Sea Bikeway rail trail and Surf Drive Beach, you can hop on a bike or board within minutes of leaving home.
