Germaphobes might want to avoid South Station on the afternoon of February 5, when a nine-foot-wide Key lime pie will be rolled in for commuters eager to share in a taste of the Florida Keys. Noteworthy Florida chef, David Sloane (author of The Ultimate Key Lime Pie Cookbook), will attempt to make history when he presents a mammoth, 1,000-pound pie for 2,000 sun-starved Bostonians.

The gargantuan creation, which will be prepared in the main concourse of the station, will incorporate the juice of 5,760 Key limes, 200 pounds of graham crackers, and 55 gallons of sweetened condensed milk—enough to top Sloane’s former world record, which he set in 2013 at the Key Lime Festival in Florida.

Sloan and his team of chefs will begin creating the pie around 3 p.m. that day, with samples available after 4 p.m. The publicity stunt is sponsored by The Florida Keys and Key West tourism board, so brochures and travel information will be available for those considering an impromptu trip out of the cold weather. Plus, you know, free pie!
