Five New England Spots Land on Condé Nast Traveler’s First-Ever Worldwide List

The editors at Condé Nast Traveler have been globetrotting on behalf of their wanderlusting readership for 28 years, but the magazine just released its first-ever, worldwide list of best restaurants. Where in the World to Eat, compiled by a team of food experts from around the world, includes 207 spots in total, and five located right here in New England.

Cambridge boasts two, James Beard Award-nominated entrants, Michael Scelfo’s generally excellent Alden & Harlow, and Ana Sortun’s longtime favorite, Oleana. At Alden & Harlow, order the burger, the out-of-towners say. CNTraveler correspondent Peter Jon Lindberg shouts out not only Sortun’s refined interpretations of North African, Middle Eastern, and Turkish ingredients and techniques, but also Oleana’s glorious backyard patio and garden.

On Nantucket, the go-to spot is Proprietors—as Boston magazine readers know, as well.

Ford Fry, an Atlanta-based chef and restaurateur, threw Vermont gem Hen of the Wood into the mix.

“I love this restaurant for chef Eric Warnstedt’s thoughtfulness toward ingredients and seasons, and his strong ties to farmers and foragers,” Fry says of the Waterbury original. “He serves up food that is straightforward and delicious.”

And finally, Portland favorites Eventide Oyster Co. can add CNTraveler’s accolade to their growing list. This year has seen chefs Mike Wiley and Andrew Taylor earn a James Beard nomination, and the seafood spot secured a place among Eater National’s essential 38 restaurants. (Oleana is there, too.)

No love from CNTraveler for Providence, which one website just ranked as the most fun city in the U.S. But if you’re looking for an exceptional meal in Li’l Rhody, consider Oberlin. The wine bar recently landed on Bon Appetit‘s Best New Restaurants shortlist, the only New England place that made the cut.

Seventy-two chefs, restaurateurs, food writers, and hospitality veterans helped compile Condé Nast Traveler’s list, which spans 42 countries, and features 147 international restaurants and 60 places in the United States.
