Party Like the Gilmore Girls at the Independent
One of the many reasons fans love Gilmore Girls is because Lorelai, Rory, and their friends in Stars Hollow have seriously good taste in music.
From Sonic Youth, to Carole King, to Yo La Tengo, the seven-season series featured many memorable cameos that give the show legitimate music snob cred. Many of the plot lines revolve around music, like sheltered Lane finding her true calling as drummer of the band Hep Alien (alongside frontman Gil, played by actual metalhead Sebastian Bach), and the pivotal Season 1 episode when Lorelai insists Rory invite her new frenemy, Paris, to the Bangles concert.
Lorelai even built a Björk snow-woman in one episode. And believe it or not, there are some early-00s teenagers who discovered the Shins not from the Garden State soundtrack, but from the Gilmore Girls‘.
Before Netflix releases the four-part mini-series Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life on Friday, the Independent is throwing down to pay homage to this facet of the cult-favorite series. Alongside Gilmore-themed food and drink specials, and episodes streaming on the bar’s TVs, DJ Kate Miles is spinning a set of Gilmore-inspired jams at the Union Square pub on Wednesday, November 23. Miles, formerly a resident DJ at the late, great River Gods, is looking at every season of the show (2000-2007), so expect tracks from Nick Drake, Joe Strummer, and more.
Will there be a Hep Alien tribute? Here’s hoping, as a trailer for A Year in the Life shows Lane taking a seat behind the drumset. Rock on.
Wednesday, November 23, beginning at 6 p.m, the Independent, 75 Union Square, Somerville, theindo.com.
