What to Eat (and Drink) This Weekend
Fête le Jour de la Bastille!
Vive la France! The French celebrate their liberty on Bastille Day, on Friday, July 14. Haley.Henry Wine Bar has rosè specials going tonight, plus foie gras sliders and stinky cheese. Have the ultimate Francophile experience at Deuxave tonight, which is celebrating with a bubbly bar featuring by-the-glass Champagne specials, and the Green Hour cocktail ($13), with Hayman’s Old Tom Gin, orgeat, Pernod absinthe, fresh lemon, and egg white. Bar Boulud pastry chef Robert Differ has an extravagant strawberry dacquoise for two tonight ($18), layered with meringue, summer strawberries, crème Chantilly, strawberry ice cream, and a hand-spun pink sugar bouffant—it’s inspired by Marie Antoinette. And the South End’s newest French haunt, Frenchie, is celebrating all weekend long. The four-day Bastille Day party kicks off tonight with a Guinguette party—drink wine, dance, and celebrate life.
Forty Ounce Wines
Patrick Cappiello—wine director of New York City’s Rebelle restaurant and the Renegade Wine Dinner, chef sommelier for Daniel Johnnes’ annual Burgundian fete La Paulée, and food and wine host for Playboy—saw a familiar-shaped bottle nestled in an esteemed Loire Valley wine cellar while visiting winemaker Julien Braud in 2015. He shared with his host the American history of the 40-ounce bottle, and a genius plan hatched. Why not put quality wine in the unpretentious vessel? Forty Ounce Muscadet debuted spring 2016, and this season brought a rosé to the portfolio, too. Look out for them on the lists at Select Oyster Bar, Townsman, and later this summer, at Branch Line—they’ll be perf on the bocce court—as well as at retailers like Social Wines, Albert’s Market, Wine Press Brookline, and more.
Ice Cream!
Sunday, July 16, is National Ice Cream Day, which comes with some super fun frozen specials, like (pictured above) Cedar Hill Dairy Joy’s fried dough sundae, and Very Berry sundae, with vanilla ice cream smothered in homemade three-berry compote. Find both at the Weston destination on Sunday only. At Honeycomb Creamery, the weekend brings a churro ice cream taco, and chocolate and honeycomb candy-coasted “drumsticks” with burnt vanilla ice cream. SoWa celebrates both days with a build-your-own-sundae bar ($6) with ingredients from the market’s local food makers and farmers, including scoops from Honeycomb Creamery, and toppings from Yummy Mummy Brownies, Top Shelf Cookies, Q’s Nuts, Doves and Figs, Chrissy’s Crumble Wicked Good No-Grain-Ola, Giacomo’s Gourmet Granola, and fresh fruit from the Herb Lyceum. In Back Bay, Atlantic Fish Co. has a peppermint ice cream pie on special this weekend, with a chocolate crust and ganache. Bart’s Ice Cream is finishing up its monthly residency at the Boston Public Market this weekend before Minus the Moo pops up next week, there are ongoing ice cream specials and events happening all summer, and of course, there are go-to ice cream shops that are always ready to satisfy your sweet tooth.
Craigie Cuisine at Notch
One of Boston’s top chefs, Tony Maws, and the venerable session brewers at Notch are celebrating their great union this summer with a series of lunches (the next one is August 4), and a casual pop-up at the Salem brewery this Sunday. Chef-owner of Craigie on Main and Kirkland Tap & Trotter, Maws is making zucchini hummus with sesame crackers and vegetables, and red chile pork tacos with assorted accompaniments, for the a la carte afternoon.

Zero Gravity Beer
This beloved Burlington, Vt., brewery has just entered the Boston-area market. Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, which started in 2004 out of the downtown pizzeria American Flatbread Burlington Hearth, grew into a larger production brewery and taproom in the city’s South End in 2015. It’s now producing enough Conehead Wheat IPA, Green State Lager, and more to share the wealth. Zero Gravity debuted on draft at Lord Hobo and Vanderbilt this week, and more accounts will be coming online soon—ask for it at your favorite bars. Cans will be hitting local retail shelves, and you can try Zero Gravity at the Pils & Love festival in South Portland, Maine, this Saturday, too.
A Taste of Game of Thrones
Season 7 is coming. Game of Thrones fans, ahead of the season premiere this Sunday, July 16, look out for GoT specials this weekend. Gather at District Hall is hosting two themed brunches, and after the show, get a team of six together to test your knowledge of the fandom (and your bowling skills, if you want) with GoT Trivia at all Mass. locations of Kings Bowl on Monday night. And Parlor Sports isn’t just the best sports bar—it’s also the best GoT bar, because it’s showing the premiere with sound on Sunday night. Catch it beginning at 9 p.m., with a cold Mad King’s Revenge in hand. The themed cocktail has Serrano pepper-infused green chartreuse, tequila, Midori, and lime.
