Must-Eat (and Drink) Culinary Events in September
Neighborhood Produce Pop-Up Market
Winter Hill resident and “ugly produce” advocate Matt Gray successfully crowdfunded the launch of Neighborhood Produce, a niche grocery store with inexpensive, fresh produce and bulk pantry items. In the meantime, he’s sharing his vision every weekend at Winter Hill Brewing Co. The pop-up markets continue through September, with seasonal vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, reusable bags, and more.
Winter Hill Brewing Co. parking lot, 328 Broadway, Somerville, Fridays, 5-8pm, Saturdays and Sundays (closed Sunday, Sept. 4) 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Facebook.
Waffle Sundae and Affogato Night
Coffee. Waffles. Ice Cream. The Parlor Ice Cream Co. is popping up at Cambridge’s new Curio Coffee with salted butter and malted maple scoops (and Taza chocolate sauce, for good measure), to pair with the house specialty, Belgian-style liege waffles. Counter Culture espresso makes a fine affogato, too.
Saturday, September 3, 6-8 p.m., Curio Coffee, 441 Cambridge St., Cambridge, 857-242-3018, Instagram.
Oktoberfest Keg Tapping Ceremony
It’s a sure sign of autumn: this Somerville beer hall is kicking off Oktoberfest season with a keg of Paulaner Wiesn, the same beer that will start the party in Munich. This special event also introduces the pub’s annual German menu, which is available every Wednesday night in September and October. Stay tuned for more dining details, but prepare to sip Hofbrau, Hack Pschorr, Ayinger, Spaten, and more Oktoberfest beers.
Wednesday, September 7, 5 p.m., Olde Magoun’s Saloon, 518 Medford St., Somerville, 617-776-2600, magounssaloon.com.
Low Country Boil
The Frogmore’s Southern hospitality includes a gratis boil of clams, mussels, shrimp, house-made andouille sausage, corn, and potatoes every single month. In September, the free feast also includes $5 Shiner beers, $10 cocktails, and Southern-inspired scoops by the Parlor Ice Cream Co. Isn’t that sweet?

Boozy Ice Cream Social
We suppose one way to celebrate Pinkberry’s new line of low-fat ice cream, Pinkbee’s, is to spike it. Beat Brasserie sure thinks so. The Harvard Square spot has a lineup of cocktail sundaes in the works, including the Mango Martini, a chocolate chip martini sundae with vodka, Kesar mango puree, wafer crumble, and candied mango, and the Banana Bread Pudding sundae with Blue Hawaiian sauce, spiced rum, coconut, pineapple and blue Curacao. Proper ID required.

Vegetarian Food Truck and Craft Beer Festival
With food truck favorites Chubby Chickpea, Taco Party, and more keeping busy schedules, vegetarians have a lot of options on the road. But for the first time, Food Truck Festivals of America will dispatch a fleet of meat-free vendors to one, designated place in September. A lineup of craft brewers are tagging along, because why not? The lineup is still growing, but expect food for purchase from the Chubby Chickpea, Frozen Hoagies, Bon Me, Taco Party, the Roving Lunchbox, and more, along with libations from Wachusett, Oskar Blues, 14th Star, Champlain Orchards Cider, and more. Choose from tickets that include three, 12-ounce beers, or a sampling ticket with unlimited, 2-ounce beer samples.
$5 entry + $18.50 or $30 beer ticket, the Arsenal Project in Watertown, 485 Arsenal Street, Saturday, September 10, noon-6 p.m., foodtruckfestivalsofamerica.com.
Kaizen, by Oisa Ramen and Juliet
Japanese cuisine is one of the inspirations behind Josh Lewin and Katrina Jazayeri’s very personal Juliet, so the duo has enlisted Moe Kuroki (Oisa Ramen) to create a couple omakase menus for a special night. Best known for slurpable bowls of tonkotsu ramen, Kuroki is looking to open a Boston-area ramen shop and izakaya. She is expanding her repertoire, so guests will try hiya mabo tofu, ramen carbonara, or brothless, mushroom maze-men, and an “omelette across all continents,” care of Lewin. Tickets will go fast, with just 36 seats available.
$50/$75, Kaizen, presented by Oisa Ramen, Monday, September 12, 6 + 8 p.m./7 p.m., Juliet, 257 Washington St., Somerville, 617-718-0958, julietsomerville.com, Eventbrite.
East Somerville Foodie Crawl
Broadway isn’t Somerville’s hippest neighborhood, but the area does offer an autnetic, exciting smorgasbord of old-school and up-and-coming restaurants. East Somerville Main Streets invites you to explore them all. This interactive tour includes more than 20 restaurants this year (with cuisine spanning five continents), including Taqueria Montecristo, Mount Vernon Pub, Fasika, La Brasa, Maya Sol Mexican Grill and Vinny’s Ristorante. Mexico’s Día de la Independencia
Celebrate Mexico’s Independent Day with a fiesta in Davis Square. The Painted Burro has a few patriotic specials, including a margarita flight with sips of coconut avocado and raspberry margaritas, representing the green and red stripes on the country’s flag, and chiles en nogada, a roasted poblano pepper stuffed with house-made chorizo and queso, smothered in a festive walnut cream sauce and pomegranate seeds.
