Premier Projects: Nicholaeff Architecture + Design

What were your inspirations for this project, and how did they align with the homeowner’s goals?

The owners were looking for a space that could accommodate the expanding families of their grown children, without being under the same roof. They requested a design for a guest house, directly relating to the main home, but with more contemporary and fun interiors. From the loft bridge, one can look out to the water, directly down to the open dining room, its table configuration dependent on the crowd size, and over to the lattice coffered ceilings of the kitchen on one end of the first floor and family room on the other. By day, the lattice ceilings play with the ever-shifting natural light, while at night, embedded up lighting sets the central core of the house aglow.

Why do you love this project?

Seen from the water, the guest house sits easily in the treed landscape, with its covered porch offering summer ease, and twin gables creating unassuming air to the expansiveness and architectural innovations within. What really makes us love this project is the enduring factor of the home, the stairwell. Seen upon entry, its shape suggests an abstracted Z. Whether ascending or descending the stairs, the shiplap walls not only wrap the stairwell, nearby walls, and immediate ceiling on the second floor in warm fir, they bestow a spa-like serenity on the entire house.
