The Revolution is Here! Everything You Need to Know About the South End’s Hottest Hotel
The Revolution Hotel, Boston’s newest hospitable hotspot, is officially open for business—and you can snag a celebratory room rate of only $100 per night.
Located at the intersection of Berkeley and Appleton streets in the South End, the 163-room midcentury modern hotel is housed in a landmark building, formerly a base for the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) in 1908 and Berkeley Residence Club in 1952. Honoring its legendary roots, the hotel pays homage to history with its interior design acknowledging all of Boston’s “firsts.”
Art lovers will feel right at home from the moment they step into the two-story lobby and spot the mural by street artist Tristan Eaton. The visual collage of pop imagery depicts the Polaroid camera and typewriter amidst portraits of Samuel Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Eaton was also commissioned to design the guestroom corridors with his first-ever carpet, a striking design that features revolutionaries like Edgar Allen Poe, Paul Revere, and Malcolm X. Adjacent to the mural, The Innovation Tower by the Boston-based Individuals Collective is a monochromatic masterpiece wrapped around an architectural column. The all-white, three-story sculpture features a collection of inventions from the telephone and optical mouse to the pink flamingo lawn ornament and Bose headphones.
The spacious lobby is the heart of the hotel with guest reception, a fireplace lounge and library inspired by the Boston Public Library, and a coffee shop with takeaway options and ice cream treats that has an interior design tie to the Boston Tea Party. A wall of repurposed mailboxes next to the front desk illustrates Boston’s claim to fame as home to the nation’s first post office. (Foodies should stay tuned for more news about the 5,000-square foot space across the lobby leading to the hotel courtyard; a new restaurant with outdoor seating will debut in 2019.)
On the garden level, the hotel’s fitness center offers Peloton bicycles, free weights, a treadmill, and stair stepper exercise machines. The décor is Boston Marathon-chic with a yellow road stripe painted on the gym floor, a nod to the world’s oldest annual marathon.
The unique artistry continues into the rooms with king and queen, triple, and quad options. All queen and some king rooms feature in-room bathrooms, while the rest use private, single-occupant bath suites down the hall with a toilet, vanity, and walk-shower. The eco-friendly layout sacrifices zero comfort, as all suites include bath amenities from Lather, fresh and fluffy white towels, and specialty Steele Canvas shower tote bags with branded robes and slippers.
For young entrepreneurs and local creatives, The Revolution Hotel also offers a co-working and meeting space. Conspire is set on the garden level and open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Free for hotel guests, the space is accessible for outside visitors for only $20 per day or a monthly membership of $250. Membership perks range from fitness center access and ongoing programming to complimentary coffee, breakfast snack bar, and community beverage hour. Conspire hosts a game lounge, Think Tank room, and boardroom adorned with IdeaPaint on the walls to spark conversation and creativity. Conspire continues the city-centric theme; the bar top centerpiece was created from a fallen elm tree planted in Back Bay in the 1880s and finished with hand-burned dates and events, including the invention of the first Gillette razor, the opening of Fenway Park, and the legal recognition of same-sex marriage. In addition, the bathrooms are tiled floor to ceiling in the colors of the MBTA subway lines as a tribute to the country’s first subway system.
