Peek Inside Sandy Pines’ New Airstream Glamping Trailer
It’s one of six new Krista Stokes-designed retreats opening at the campground this weekend.
One sign that summertime is actually on the way? Opening weekend at Sandy Pines, Kennebunkport’s glamping resort, kicks off today. Like last year, when the resort rolled out “camp carriages” and “hideaway huts,” Sandy Pines is once again introducing a slew of new Krista Stokes-designed getaways for the season. Called “unique retreats,” the accommodations bring a little bit of quirk and a whole lot of extravagance to the camping experience (if you’d even call it camping).

Perhaps the most Instagram-worthy of the new retreats opening for Sandy Pines’ third season is “Zephyr,” a silver, 60s-inspired airstream trailer. For the interior of the petite hideaway, which can accommodate two guests, Stokes drew inspiration from the Maine wilderness as well as old Hollywood glamour. AstroTurf covers the sides of the trailer, and weathered wood lines its curved ceiling and walls. The local designer bedecked the space with punchy blues and greens, from the “Studio Green” Farrow & Ball paint that surrounds the bed to the coloful throw pillows—a velvet pair by Erin Flett and a palm-printed set by Manuel Canovas from Cowtan & Tout. Stokes picked up a bar cart, table, and artwork, meanwhile, on eBay and at local flea markets.
The resort’s five other new lodgings include “Stargazer,” a 13-foot glass dome with 360-degree views; “Wild Blue Yonder,” two reimagined Conestoga Wagons inspired by prairie living; “Starry Nights,” a 12-by-16-foot house featuring natural materials and enormous glass windows and doors; and lastly, “Astral,” which is based on a shepherd’s hut. While all of the unique retreats are designed for two, the campground is also opening new family cottages, complete with a king-sized bed, twin bunks, a mini fridge, and air conditioning, plus a fire-pit and outside seating. Need more whimsy? Sandy Pines is also hosting a series of themed weekends and events this summer, including a “vintage camping weekend” for Father’s Day and a carnival with an animal farm in July.
